BRYAN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
AUGUST 21, 2007

More than 2000 Bryan ISD employees will gather in convocation at Central
Baptist Church at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. The annual
back-to-school gathering will feature inspirational speaker Liz Murray,
whose life was chronicled in the 2003 Lifetime Television movie, From
Homeless to Harvard. Murray grew up in the Bronx, the child of drug
addicted parents. By age 15, her mother had died and Murray was homeless
- living in the streets, riding the subway all night, and eating from
dumpsters. Determined to take charge of her life, Murray finished high
school in just two years while camping out in New York City parks and
subway stations. She was awarded a scholarship to Harvard after
attending Columbia University for a short period to be closer to her ill
father.

Bryan ISD teachers began in-service training on August 16. School begins
on Monday, Aug. 27.
