School Counselors Celebrate During National School Counseling Week, Feb.
5-9, 2007
Bryan ISD's 32 school counselors are being recognized during National
School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor
Association (ASCA), Feb. 5-9, 2007. National School Counseling Week
highlights the tremendous impact counselors have in helping students
achieve school success and plan for a career.
"Our counselors implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a
vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the
challenges of the 21st century," said Bryan ISD Superintendent Mike
Cargill.
Cargill cites school counselors for being actively engaged in helping
students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for
working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges
of raising children in today's world; for focusing on positive ways to
enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development;
and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational
system where students can realize their potential and set healthy,
realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.
Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with
a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their
training and experience makes them an integral part of the total
educational program.
"The counselor, or academic adviser, is the 'go-to' person on a campus,"
said Dr. Ellen Blair, Director of Counseling and Guidance for Bryan ISD.
"School counseling has changed substantially and grown significantly
over the past decade," Blair said, noting that a counselor's role is
vital to the overall educational process.
In addition to campus-based recognition, Casa Rodriguez restaurant in
downtown Bryan is honoring BISD counselors with a free meal to reward
their efforts on behalf of the students.
