Carnegie Library's namesake to be honored with sculpture
Public art to be unveiled May 5
The newest piece of public art in Bryan will be unveiled Saturday, May
5, at 10 a.m. in front of the Carnegie Center of Brazos Valley History,
located at 111 South Main Street.
The bronze sculpture called Treasured Moment - a life-sized
representation of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and two children
sitting on a bench - was created by local artist Lynn Haste. Haste also
created the Bryan Bomber sculptures located across Main Street, near the
LaSalle Hotel, and the Thor sculpture that is displayed in front of
Bryan High School.
Treasured Moment depicts Carnegie reading the Robert Louis Stevenson
classic, Treasure Island, to two children - a symbol of Carnegie's
commitment to the power of knowledge.
At a cost of $40,000, Treasured Moment was funded by the City of Bryan,
the Arts Council of Brazos Valley, and Friends of the Bryan + College
Station Public Library System. During the Saturday unveiling, Mayor
Ernie Wentrcek will accept a $5,000 contribution from the Friends of the
Library to go toward the sculpture.
About the Carnegie Library
Opened in 1903 with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, the Carnegie
Library - now known as the Carnegie Center of Brazos Valley History - is
one of the state's oldest operating Carnegie Libraries. The
classically-designed structure was fully restored in 1999 and serves as
one of Bryan's most-recognized landmarks. The Carnegie now serves as a
repository for local historical artifacts, as well as a center for
genealogical studies.
