Old Reliance bridge to be replaced

Plans have been developed for the anticipated letting this summer of a
$6.5 million construction project to replace a functionally obsolete
two-lane bridge at Old Reliance Road over SH 6 in Bryan, Texas.
Construction on the new bridge is anticipated to be complete before the
start of the 2010-11 school year.  The new structure will be wide enough
for U-turns in each direction, two through lanes in each direction and
two left-turn lanes.  It will have ADA-compliant pedestrian walkways on
both sides.

The current structure is an impediment to the east-west vehicular
traffic over SH 6.  It restricts access to the new Rudder High School
and is unusable for pedestrian access.  Recent upgrades by the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to the frontage roads and
intersections have provided additional traffic flow; however, the narrow
structure is still a bottleneck to vehicular traffic over SH 6 and is
unusable for pedestrians.

Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee and other City Officials worked with the Bryan
District of TxDOT to bring the increasingly inadequate traffic situation
to the attention of TxDOT's administration in Austin.  TxDOT's District
Office in Bryan worked with administrators to bring this matter before
the Texas Transportation Commission and the Commission recently approved
the use of bridge rehabilitation and replacement funds to address the
growing school safety need.  The City of Bryan and TxDOT look forward to
the construction of this needed local project.
