Bryan recognized for promoting heart and brain health

The Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke recently
recognized the City of Bryan with an Honorable Mention award for
promoting heart and brain health.

The council's Texas Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program
honors cities that advance identified best practices for preventing and
controlling heart disease and stroke.

"This program helps bring into focus those cities that raise the bar in
cardiovascular health," said Tom Tenner, chairman of the Texas Council
on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. "The City of Bryan is being
acknowledged at the Honorable Mention Level based on an assessment of
the city's implementation of recognized best practices in policies and
environmental changes that promote heart and brain health. Bryan has
fully met nine of the 10 program indicators and is making progress
toward meeting the remaining one."

A set of 10 indicators are used to determine recognition of a Heart and
Stroke Healthy City.

Environmental indicators include offering physical activity areas,
healthy eating options, defibrillators and CPR classes in the community.
Policy indicators consist of implementation of strong smoke-free
ordinances in worksites, restaurants, and day care centers; an EMS
system with emergency treatment protocols and priority response times to
calls for heart attacks or strokes; and recognized guidelines for the
care and treatment of heart attack and stroke in hospitals.

The Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke was created in
1999 by the Texas Legislature and appointed by the governor. The mission
of the Council is to educate, inform and facilitate action among Texans
to reduce the human and financial toll of cardiovascular disease and
stroke.
