The Council's Texas Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program honors cities that advance recognized best practices for preventing and controlling heart disease and stroke. "This program helps bring into focus those cities that raise the bar in cardiovascular health," said Tom Tenner, PhD, Chair of the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. "The City of Bryan and the other recognized cities were found to be best prepared, based on an assessment of recognized best practices in policies and environmental changes." The following cities were recognized at the Gold, Silver, or Bronze Level this year: Gold Level: Marshall, Nacogdoches, Tyler Silver Level: Bryan, Georgetown, Longview, Temple Bronze Level: Harlingen, Odessa Ten indicators are used to determine recognition as a Heart and Stroke Healthy City. Environmental indicators include offering physical activity areas, healthy eating options, defibrillators and CPR classes in the community. Policy indicators include smoke-free ordinances in worksites, restaurants, and day care centers; an EMS system with priority response times to 911 calls for heart attacks or strokes, and recognized guidelines for the care and treatment of heart attack and stroke in hospitals. The mission of the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke is to educate, inform and facilitate action among Texans to reduce the human and financial toll of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Law Enforcement Release: 2012 Warrant Round Up Starting Message-ID: <9E906DDD3AE02349BD5463F78481A1FF014B22E0F3@cobmaildb.cobnet.org> 2012 Great Texas Warrant Roundup Every year law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Texas issue citations to violators that commit minor infractions of the law. The violator signs the citation promising they will appear before the court. Too many times, the violator never takes proper action to handle their pending case in the respective court. Many of these cases are traffic related citations that the violator did not follow up on; as a result an active warrant has been issued for their arrest. Within this group of law enforcement agencies, there are thousands of active warrants and millions of dollars in unpaid fines. Starting February 25, 2012, each of the law enforcement agencies here today and over 200 other law enforcement agencies across the State of Texas will participate in the Texas Warrant Roundup. The Roundup will last from February 25 through March 11th. Officers will be looking for individuals that have active warrants at their residence or workplace and during any hours of the day or night. With the help of law enforcement, officers will be actively searching for these wanted people. The roundup is designed to target thousands of defendant's warrants from participating jurisdictions. It is believed to be the largest joint operation of its kind with arrests expected to continue for several days. Hundreds of thousands of notices were recently mailed statewide by participating entities. Numerous counties, justices of the peace, constables, and municipalities of all sizes will participate in the roundup. We urge anyone with outstanding citations, especially those in warrant status, to come in and address their business with the Court as soon as possible. Many of the agencies are participating in a warrant amnesty period. This is the time to take care of your warrant without being arrested. Amnesty starts now, so please take advantage of this time to take care of your case. Don't take a chance on being arrested. Take care of your business with the courts before February 25th. Beginning February 25th, the Great State of Texas Warrant Roundup begins and everyone contacted with an active warrant will be arrested. DATES TO REMEMBER: WARRANT FEE - SUSPENSION PERIOD: Monday, Feb 13 - Friday, Feb 24, 2012 NOTE: Defendants can come in and pay fines -or- be subject to arrest during the round-up. The October 12-13 date was selected after input was gathered from a variety of stakeholders, including the Bryan City Council, downtown merchants, Texas Reds volunteers, event patrons, citizens, sponsors and others. Also taken into account during the date selection process was the Texas A&M football schedule; the Aggies do not have a game on October 13. The date also does not interfere with previously scheduled events in Downtown Bryan, like First Friday, which is scheduled for October 5. Texas Reds organizers will continue to gather input from across the community to help the 6th Annual Texas Reds Steak & Grape Festival reach its potential. Stay tuned to TexasRedsFestival.com for more announcements regarding Texas Reds in the future. Horton donated several children's books to the program to encourage the Bryan community to pass along their own books when the drive begins Monday, Feb. 20. >From Feb. 20 through March 31, all Half Price Books locations serve as drop off sites to collect new and used children's books, and Half Price Books will match each book donated during the drive. Half Price Books employees sort through the books to make sure children will receive only quality new and gently-used books. Giveaway events, where the books will be distributed, will be scheduled shortly after the conclusion of the drive, and Half Price Books will invite local non-profit groups to pick up the books. Last year, more than 2,500 books were distributed in the Bryan community and since the program's inception in 1998, more than 2 million books have been collected nationwide for children to share and enjoy. To celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2012, Half Price Books has launched its Million Book Donation Project, with the goal of donating one million books to organizations in need throughout the year. Each book that Half Price Books matches during Half Pint Library will be included in this initiative. To view the program's progress, visit www.hpb.com/million.
